Running an agency with depression

Episode 274 - Featuring Lee Matthew Jackson

July 8, 2020

I’ve been battling with my mental health many year. I’ve had a range of support including medication to keep me on track but things are still hard. Getting up in the morning is still an effort. A throw away comment from someone can still send me spiralling for days.

Yet somehow I am able to show up online. Whilst I don’t always get it right, I am going in the right direction and that is forward.

In this episode I share what keeps me motivated and moving forward:

  • I am driven by my mission
  • I know exactly who I serve
  • I resonate with the problems I am helping others solve
  • I am honest about my feelings
  • I talk to others
  • I seek help

Important: These are my experiences and should not be considered as medical advice. Whilst I hope this encourages and inspires you, remember you must get professional medical advice to help you manage your depression.

  • Hey Lee,

My name is Chris and I have to say that I am inspired by your courage to speak about your struggles and touched by your vulnerability as you shared some of your trials with honesty and transparency. I would have never guessed that someone with your spirit and enthusiasm for your line of work would have the struggle of mental wellness. But depression strikes even those who are generous with their time and hearts, like you.

I too struggle with mental health. I have schizoaffective disorder with generalized anxiety disorder. Like with you, the daily simple tasks of life can be so much more challenging and complicated than they are on other days. But I find peace in your accounts of your life’s events. To have the empathy and drive to help others even while life is so difficult speaks to your character and heart.

Like you, I also have a great team of support whether they are my blood family or some of the friends I’ve made in my everyday life. It makes a big difference when you can just be vulnerable with them and know your needs will be met with compassion and love.

I’m starting to break into the field of web design and hearing you be so open about your path to mental wellness encourages me that with time and the right amount of support that a chance at a career in the field is real and attainable.

Thanks again for this podcast and for all of the work that you do. (I also watch the UX reviews and other videos you do with Piccia Neri and Jan.)

    Be well
